About Danica
Danica Wichtermann
Ceramic Artist & Educator | Founder of Rediscover Ceramics, Perth WA
Nestled in the foothills of Perth in Wattle Grove, I’m a ceramic artist and educator creating work that reflects my deep connection to the Australian bush. My name is Danica Wichtermann, and through my studio, Rediscover Ceramics, I craft porcelain vessels and artworks inspired by the native flora, fauna, and fragile ecosystems that surround me.
My journey with clay began in 2006 and has since evolved into a practice that bridges storytelling, education, and environmental awareness. Working primarily with Southern Ice Porcelain, I create wheel-thrown vessels that feature carved illustrations, botanical textures, and detailed surface finishes. The external surfaces are often left unglazed — smooth, matte, and tactile — inviting you to hold them and feel the work embedded in every form.
Many of my pieces feature Australian native plants and birds, including threatened species such as the red-tailed black cockatoo. I’m particularly drawn to capturing the quiet details that connect us to Country — the curve of a leaf, the mark of a feather, the story of what’s vanishing and what remains.
I hold a Bachelor of Fine Arts and a Diploma of Education from Curtin University, and I’ve been teaching ceramics since 2008. For over a decade, I worked as a high school art teacher and have run community workshops, artist-led school incursions, and professional development sessions for educators. Teaching has become inseparable from my art practice — I love sharing my knowledge just as much as I love making.
My work has been exhibited in respected galleries including Aspects of Kings Park, John Curtin Gallery gift shop, The Studio Gallery in Yallingup, and Moores Gallery in Fremantle, and is held in private collections across Australia and internationally.

Rediscover Ceramics is not just a studio — it’s a space to pause, create, and reconnect with your own creativity and with the land we live on. Whether you’re visiting to purchase handmade ceramics, join a workshop, or commission a custom piece, I invite you to experience the art of slowing down and making with intention.
‘‘From my home to yours; from my hands to yours. Please enjoy and Rediscover Ceramics.”
A Personal Note
Outside of clay, I’m a wife, mum, and nature-lover, doing my best to balance a creative life with a full and beautiful family one. I’m incredibly fortunate to have a wonderfully supportive husband, two spirited little ones — Aurora and Lachlan — and a cheeky staffy dog named Xena, plus a few free-ranging chickens to keep things interesting.
Together, we’ve created a peaceful space we call home in the foothills of Perth, surrounded by bushland and birdsong. My children often join me in the studio to “play clay” by my side, and it brings me so much joy to share the magic of making with them.
Running Rediscover Ceramics from home allows me to stay grounded in what I love most — creating thoughtful, handmade pieces inspired by our landscape, and passing on that love of clay through workshops and community connections.
If you’re ever nearby, I’d love to welcome you into my studio display space in Wattle Grove. Or come along to a workshop — slow down, get muddy, and rediscover the joy of making with your hands.
“No production line — just my hands, the clay, and a story in every piece.”
Thank You
I’m incredibly fortunate to have the support of the amazing Paige Bentley in the studio. With two young children, a busy teaching schedule, and my own creative practice, Paige's help is invaluable in keeping everything running smoothly. They are a talented technician and educator at Curtin University and also maintain their own vibrant art practice, from whimsical and intricate imagery on pottery, to a multi-disciplinary approach to speculative fiction, archive, digital materiality, gender, and - sometimes - animals who rob other animals. You can explore more of their work at @pogbent.com.au.
